​Look Ahead to the Future of Buddhism: Buddhist Cultural Workshop for Korean

and American Youth

​

On August 4, the Korean-American Buddhist Youth Cultural Exchange Team
departed from Incheon Airport at 1 P.M. and arrived at John F. Kennedy Airport at 3 P.M. on the same day. The team included members from the International
Buddhist Youth Exchange of the Jogye Order, led by Venerable Gyeseong, and the Korean Buddhism International Network, led by Venerable Jeongbeop. The
7th Korean-American Buddhist Youth Cultural Exchange Team of 27 people, including their leader Venerable Jeongbeop, were greeted by a welcoming committee of 30, comprised of 23 American youths and seven staff members.

Together, they quickly set off to the Bulkwang Zen Center in New York (led by Abbot Hwikwang).
For four days and three nights, the team of 50 Korean and American youths gathered together and cemented unforgettable friendships through various
activities and exchanges. During that period, the participants attended the Templestay program, joining morning chants, meditation practice, and performing 108 bows to learn about Buddhism in various ways. Furthermore,
they discussed one another’s interests, listened to a dharma talk from the abbot of Wongaksa, a nearby temple, and even had an opportunity to look into the minds of fellow team members, gaining insight into their thoughts.

Afterwards, they took field trips to a number of places: Manhattan, in New York, New Haven, Boston, and Washington D.C. They toured the distinguished
educational institutions of Harvard and Yale Universities, and got a taste of world culture at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Smithsonian Museum.

Additionally, they visited the Statue of Liberty and the Observation Deck of the Top of the Rock, as well as historic Rockefeller Center. They took some time
to think about how to cultivate their young passions in American culture.

Moreover, the pledge they made at this site, where the world language of English is spoken, still rang in their ears, instead of the familiar language of Korean.

Among the participants, one of the youngest members of the team, Lee Soohyun, a seventh grader, promised to become a great guide the following year by studying English hard over the next twelve months. For a period of 10 days, the participants took the time to think about their experience directly in their minds, and reflect on their learning in their hearts.

They each saw the need to grow in this vast world, filled with things to see and learn, and people to meet and form bonds with.

Furthermore, the participants had an opportunity to talk with Korean-American university student mentors, getting a deeper glimpse into their lives in New
York. They gained enough confidence to take a trip to another part of the world. At first, they felt a bit distant and awkward, because of the language barrier, but thanks to their shared ethnic background as Koreans, they soon felt a sense of happiness, seeing each other as one. During that period, they
also reflected on their excuses for lapsed practice in Buddhism, being
too busy in the past. They learned from the generous volunteer work of the youth members of Bulkwang Zen Center, and their hearts were filled with the desire to provide some kind of assistance towards the next group who would
take part in the program.

On the afternoon of August 15th, they arrived back at Incheon International Airport, filled with sadness over their parting. After all, they had spent the 10-day trip as close as family. There, they held a ceremony of disbanding, thinking about their next reunion.

At the beginning of the trip, some members had been afraid to leave their homes, but at the end of the trip, they commented that they would love to participate in the next year’s workshop. The glow of happiness remained, as the members thought of their smiles.

These young children are now filled with self-esteem and have taken on roles in the future of Buddhism. We would like to offer our thanks and appreciation to
the leader Venerable Jeongbeop, and everyone at Bulkwang Zen Center: the venerables-Seonghwa, Hyewon, Neungeom, and Yugyeong; the youth Volunteers; the Mothers’ Association of the Youth; and the Males Association.
After the successful conclusion of the 2017 workshop, we now look forward to the future, when the seeds planted on this occasion will grow up to become great members of our society and country.​

불심으로 스님과 함께 그리고 한미청소년 연합캠프 통해 우정 쌓아

조계종 국제전법단(단장 계성스님)과 한국불교국제네트워크(대표 정범스님)가 진행한 한미청소년불교화연수단은 지난 8월 4일 오후 1시 인천공항을 출발하여 같은 날 오후 3시 뉴욕 존에프케네디 공항에 도착했다. 단장 정범스님을 비롯하여 27명으로 구성된 제7회 한미청소년불교문화연수단은 미국 청소년 23명과 스탭 등 30여 명이 우리를 기다리고 있는 뉴욕 불광선원(주지 휘광스님)을 향해 부지런히 움직였다. 이번에는 3박4일 동안 한미 청소년 50여 명이 어우러져 새벽예불, 참선, 108배 등 템플스테이를 하며 다양한 불교를 배우고, 서로의 관심사를 토론하고, 이웃 절 원각사를 방문하여 주지스님의 법문을 듣고, 팀원들의 생각과 마음 등을 살피는 교류의 장을 만들어 잊지 못할 우정을 쌓았다.

이후 미국의 심장부인 뉴욕, 맨해튼, 코네티컷, 보스턴, 워싱턴 등을 돌아보며 하버드대학교, 예일대학교, 메트로폴리탄 박물관, 스미소니언박물관 등 유수한 대학과 세계 문화를 견학하고, 자유의 여신상, 록펠러 전망대 등 미국 문화를 통해 젊음의 열정을 어떻게 쌍아 올릴지 고민하는 시간도 가졌다. 또 하나는 익숙한 한국말 대신 세계 공통어인 영어가 귀를 자극하는 현장에 서 보며 갖게 된 다짐들이 생생하게 남았다. 연수단원 중 막내격인 중1 이수현양은 1년 동안 열심히 영어 공부해서 내년에는 멋진 안내자가 되겠다고 약속도 했다. 세상은 넓고 다양하여 봐야 할 것과 알아야만 하는 일들 그리고 관계를 맺고 성장해야 하는 사회망 등 우린 10여 일 동안 직접 체험을 통해 머리로 생각하고 마음에 품으며 가슴에 새겼다.

뿐만 아니라 대학생 멘토들과의 대화를 통해 뉴욕에서의 생활을 더 깊숙이 들어보는 시간을 계기로 세계 어디를 가든 이젠 자유 여행을 할 수 있을 것 같은 여유도 생겼다. 또한, 처음에는 언어가 달라 거리감이 존재했었는데 이틀째부터는 우리가 한민족이라는 사실이 바탕이 되어 서로가 서로를 챙기는 모습에서 나만의 행복감도 맛보게 되었고, 바쁘다는 핑계로 불교에 대해 막연했던 지난 생활을 되돌아보며 더 많은 관심과 함께 불광선원 청년부 회원들의 아낌없는 봉사를 본받아 후배들을 위해 뭔가 도움을 주고 싶다는 욕구 또한 솟구쳤다.

8월 15일 오후, 인천공항에 도착한 우린 10여 일을 동거동락한 식구이기에 헤어짐의 아쉬움이 가득했지만, 다음을 기약하며 해단식을 거행했다. 집을 떠나 지낸다는 게 두려움으로 다가온 친구들도 후기를 통해 꼭 내년에도 함께하고 싶다는 말을 남긴 단원들의 모습을 떠올리면 지금도 행복감이 밀려온다. 그 많은 아이들에게 자긍심과 함께 불교 미래의 한 자락을 쥐어준 단장 정범스님, 불광선원 성화스님, 혜원스님, 능엄스님, 유경스님과 청년부 봉사 회원, 불광선원 청소년 자모회, 거사회 등 많은 인연들께 진심으로 감사드리며, 이번 인연이 씨앗이 되어 사회와 국가에 멋진 구성원으로 회향 될 날을 그리며 2017년 연수는 마무리 되었다.
