Wongaksa of New York is reaching the completion of its grand construction plan. The ceremony for construction of Seolsandang and Borimwon was held at Wongaksa Temple in Salisbury Mills, New York on Oct. 14.

Wongaksa, which has been implementing a grand construction plan, has already held ceremony for construction of the main hall in 2015 and Muryangsujeon (Hall for Urns) in 2017. The ceremony began with the traditional percussion team at the temple. Once the construction is complete, Seolsandang will be a living quarter and dining hall for the monks and Borimwon will be a Zen center.

Ven. Jeongwoo, Ven. Hyungo, Ven. Wonyeong and many other monks have attended the ceremony while 450 members of the temple represented by Jong Hwaseop, the chair of construction committee and Jeong Daewonhaeng, the president of lay followers at the temple also participated at the ritual.

Once the construction is completed, Wongaksa Temple will be a monumental Korean temple in the U.S. The high-quality woods used for the construction were as old as 900 years. There will not be any pillars within the building and the buildings will be built without any nails using the traditional building method of Goryeo Danasty.

Ven. Jeongwoo, the Zen Master of Wongaksa Temple smiled while stating that “we are able to welcome this memorable day thanks to Buddha’s guidance and prayers of all our practitioners and followers.”

Wongaksa TEmple will complete the construction of the two buildings by this year. Next year, Wongaksa will construct Jeokmyeolbogung, a great hall for Buddha, in front of the pagoda that holds Buddha’s sarira. Lastly, a bell pavilion and two gates will be built so that Wongaksa would become a great temple 20 years after it has become a temple under Tongdosa Temple, the head temple of 15th district.

뉴욕원각사, 동당과 서당 상량식을 거행하며 대작 불사 진행

미동부 뉴욕 원각사(주지 지광스님)가 대작불사의 완결을 향해 나아가고 있다. 10월 14일 뉴욕주 샐리스베리 밀즈에 위치한 원각사에서 설산당(동당)과 보림원(서당) 선방의 상량식이 잇따라 거행됐다.

대작불사를 진행 중인 원각사에선 지난 2015년 전통 대웅전 상량식을, 2017년엔 무량수전(납골봉안당) 상량식을 각각 거행한 바 있다. 이번 상량식은 원각사 풍물패 네울림의 흥겨운 장단으로 시작되었으며, 불사가 마무리되면 설산당은 스님들 요사채와 식당으로 사용되고, 보림원은 참선방으로 쓰인다.

이날 상량식엔 원각사 회주 정우 스님과 현고 스님, 보리사 회주 원영 스님 등 많은 스님들과 정화섭 불사추진위원장, 정대원행 원각사 신도회장 등 450여 명이 함께한 가운데 축원 법회를 봉행했다.

원각사에서 그간 상량식이 봉행된 네 채의 건물은 미국에서도 기념비적인 절집이 될 전망이다. 최고 수령 900년 전후의 최고급 목재들이 활용되고, 내부에 기둥 없이 지어졌으며, 못을 하나도 쓰지 않고 정교하게 조립하는 고려시대 양식을 재현하고 있기 때문이다.

이날 원각사 회주 정우 큰스님은 “부처님의 위신력과 사부대중의 원력으로 뉴욕 원각사가 뜻깊은 날을 맞게 되었다”며 환한 미소를 지었다.

원각사는 올해 안에 동당과 서당의 기와작업을 마무리하고 내년부터는 대작불사 2단계로 부처님 진신사리탑 앞에 적멸보궁을 들이게 된다. 마지막 3단계로 종탑과 일주문, 천왕문이 차례로 세워지면 불보사찰 통도사의 직계사찰로 인연을 맺은 지 20년 만에 대가람의 완결을 보게 된다. 제공-글로벌웹진 NEWSROH www.newsroh.com
