Bohyun Buddha Temple and Zen Center in Texas (Abbot: Ven. 

Jiam) completed the 10-week compassion and repentance 

prayer practice from June 5 to August 4, 2022. Based on 

the Cibei daochang chanfa (慈悲道場懺法), a Chinese text

commissioned by Emperor Wu of the Liang Dynasty for his 

deceased wife who was reborn as a snake, the practice was 

meant to be dedicated at the ullambana, the All Souls' Day. 

Braving sweltering heat, the congregation ceaselessly bowed 

and prayed to repent their wrongdoings. But they also had 

fun when, as part of the penance they prepared food and 

shared them at the temple, making it a big feast day for the 

community. On September 11,2022, Bohyun Buddha Temple 

公 Zen Center hosted ancestral rites for the Full Moon Festival 

or Chuseok. The Korean-American Buddhists at the temple 

got into the holiday spirit by making traditional rice cakes and 

mung bean pancakes together for the ritual.
