Buddhist sutras are the records of the Buddha’s teachings. Buddhism refers to sutras as the Dharma Jewel and reveres them as objects of faith. In addition, all Mahayana sutras praise the merits of receiving and reciting the sutras as well as teaching them to others. Sutra reading includes reading the scriptures either quietly or aloud.

When reading sutras, we are communing with the Buddha. We should read the sutra and appreciate the inner meaning of the teaching as if the Buddha was teaching the sutra in front of us and we were listening to him in person. When the words of the sutra become embodied within our whole being, we can conduct our daily lives according to the Buddha's teachings.
