Samatha and Vipassana
Samatha meditation is called “concentration meditation” or “calm-abiding meditation.” Vipassana meditation is called “insight meditation.” Samatha meditation helps to calm one’s mind and concentrate it on a single object. Based on the tranquility one has attained through samatha meditation, one practices vipassana meditation to realize the impermanence and interdependence of mind and materiality. About samatha and vipassana, the Buddha said:
"Bhikkhus, when samatha is cultivated, what benefit does it bring? The mind is developed.
When the mind is developed, what benefit does it bring? All craving is extinguished.
Bhikkhus, when vipassana is cultivated, what benefit does it bring? Insight is developed.
When insight is developed, what benefit does it bring? All ignorance is extinguished."
- Vijjabhagiya-sutta (AN 2.3.10)
