한국의 선

20세기 후반 중국의 선 수행전통이 실질적으로 사라지면서 한국은 화두를 사용하여
깨달음을 구하는 선 수행전통이 살아있는 유일한 국가로 남게되었다.
현재에도 많은 외국인들이 조계종에서 선 수행을 배우고 법계를 받고 있으며
한국은 선 수행 전통을 이어가고 발전시키는 것에 있어 세계적인 명성을 받고있다.

Korean Seon(zen)

With a virtual end to organized Seon(zen) meditation in China during the latter half of the
20th century, Korean became and is now widely recognized as the leading preserver and
practitioner nation of the Seon tradition of seeking enlightenment with use of a koan
(K:hwadu). As a result, large numbers of people from many nations have also taken
ordination in Jogye order and Korea has become justifiably proud of its growing worldwide
reputation for excellence in preserving and practicing the Seon tradition

한국불교와 조계종

조계종의 뿌리는 1,200년전 통일신라시대의 도의국사로부터 시작된다.
도의국사는 서기 820년 중국의 6조 혜능선사로부터 가르침을 이어받았으며
826년에는 구산선문에서 조계종이라는 명칭을 채택하여 통일신라 이후까지
국가발전에 이바지하였다.

고려시대에는 보조 지눌 국사와 태고 보우 국사가 선 불교를 크게 융성시켰다.
조계종은 조선시대의 억불정책 전까지 한국 선맥의 큰 흐름을 이어가게 되었고
조선시대에도 민간신앙으로 굳건히 전통을 이어오다 일제시대의 일본불교와의
혼습을 거부하며 1960년대에 대한불교 조계종으로 자랑스럽게 중흥하게 되었다.

한국불교는 전체 인구의 54%가 각종 종교를 믿고 있으며, 종교인구 가운데 47%가
불교신자인 것으로 2003년 인구 센서스에서 조사되었다.

조계종은 현재 25개 본사에 3,000 여 사찰로 구성되어 있으며 정부로부터 인가받은
전통사찰 가운데 90%인 840개 사찰이 조계종 소속이다.

Korean Buddhism and Jogye order

Whatever you do, wherever you go in Korea, you will find some of the ancient Buddhist
heritage which has dominated and influenced every aspect of Korean life for the past
1,700 years.

Among the half of Korean people claimed religious affiliation with major religions,
about 47% or about 12 million are Buddhists. Currently there are 25 Buddhist ordres
belonging to the Association of Korean Buddhist Orders, among which the Jogye order is
the largest. There are 25 nationwide districts that include more than 3,000 branch temples
and Buddhist centers under Jogye order. Of the 870 traditional temples in Korean which
are recognized, preserved and supported by the government, more than 90 percent,
or 840, belong to Jogye order; these temples house more than 65 % of Korean's
designated National Treasures and Local Treasures. More than 2,000 of the 12,000
ordained monks and nuns participate in the intensive three-month winter and summer
meditation retreats at these meditation facilities.
